I am trying to install a printer on my laptop using a USB port, but everytime I try, it says that there is a problem with installing new hardware, and I don't know why! Can anyone help?

Many times when installing a printer with a USB port, you need to run the setup disk for the printer before connecting the USB cable. If you have done this already, then reboot. Once it's back up then plug in the cable.
Hope that helps

Could be a problem with the driver or the operating system. What kind of printer is it? What o/s are you running? If you have XP and the printer is quite old this could cause installation problems. Try updating the driver for the printer?

it may be due to the laptop having usb 1.1 and the printer is usb 2.0 only, but i doubt it because they usually are backward compatable. unplug printer, uninstall any and all printer software that was on the disk from your laptop and start the process again. most hardware requires that you load the driver disk first before installing the hardware, so just follow the on screen instructions and plug in printer when told to do so.

Check in your BIOS, and see if the USB ports are enabled.
It may be the drivers for the USB ports that needs to be checked. Having an AMD CPU, and Viatech USB Host Controller Drivers can cause problems with the USB ports, change the drivers to Microsoft's standard drivers, may work.

try installing the software from the CD first or have it in the drive when the hardware wizard searches for drivers

UN-INSTALL YOUR PREVIOUS INSTALLATION AND TRY TO INSTALL IT AGAIN BUT THIS TIME DO NOT PLUG THE PRINTER UNTIL THE INSTALLATION MANAGER ASK YOU TO PLUG YOUR PRINTER TO THE LAPTOP.
