Despite claims to the contrary swordtails like molly (platty, guppy too) are not brackish fish. Molly, and guppy can live in saltwater if the change is slow, and platty, and swordtail can likewise live in brackish water. (Most people who find their live bearers do better with large amounts of aquarium salt have very soft water.)

That said if you have a breeding tank for swordtail, and only intended to put livebearers in it. Up the salt levels to about 1 teaspoon of salt per gallon. (Slowly predisolved in a cup of tank water.) This will help prevent ich, velvet, and the like.

PS- Swordtails will happily eat their young. You'll need lots of cover, or a breeder box.

Swordtails are brackish fish. They do not have to have it but they would be more comfortable in it. If the young do not have places to hide they will eat their young. Or if you keep the young in the breeding net then they will be safe. If you need instructions on the breeding net then look on the back of the box. The main point though is to put the female in the net, once it lays all of its babies then take it out.

Swordtails don't need salt in their water, but they can benefit from it. Put 1.5 tablespoon of AQUARIUM salt per 10 gallons of water. Be sure to disolve it first in a cup of aquarium water before putting it in the tank - the crystals can burn your fish's gills.

Yes, swordtails will eat their young if they get the chance.
