To me it means something that you could wear 20 years from now, and still look good.

A classic American novel would be one that exemplifies the values of the nation, or one that sort of sums up the American experience. Example would be Jon Dos Passos (sp?) 1919, part of the American trilogy. The characters and experiences are just SO American.......:) It captures the flavor of the country.
