Do not respond....Ignore them.. Racists get their strength by the way people respond to them.. Respondents usually upset, emotional, and angry... Responding in this mood causes the reseonder to say unwise, racist thngs as well just giving credence to the racist... If no one answered they would not post anymore questions......Its like Einstein said... For every action there is a reaction...DO NOT BE THE REACTION...

I think it depends a lot on context. If their comments are really outrageous they're probably just trying to bait people for attention. The best way to handle that is to ignore them - they'd rather get 30 angry answers than be left sitting on an unanswered question.
It's a lot trickier to deal with people who use well intentioned but cringe-worthy language or ideas. Maybe the best you can do is take their concerns seriously by giving a thoughtful response, but also add that something in what they said may not be appropriate. Respect is important when you are asking someone to reevaluate something about themselves.
That's not to say anger in either case isn't deserved or justified. But it seems like there's kind of a shield online that emboldens people who would wilt in an actual confrontation.
