The falling apple probably is a myth. But it is used as an example to fully illustrate Sir Issac Newton's genius.
Newton's discovery is anything but intuitive - he concluded that the same force that caused an apple to fall to the ground was the same exact force that held the planets and our moon in their respected orbits. Needless to say, at the time, that was quite a concept for the average layman to accept - and another giant step in man's understanding of the universe.

Since there is no eyewitness record of the event, that is why it's often called myth.

However, Sir Newton did spend time on at a country estate with apple trees, and it is quite possible that he observed the falling apples which triggered his ideas about gravity.
