Literally, it means to live or thrive. "Buhay" means life in Tagalog. It might suggest to someone to have a good life. It is usually used as a greeting in certain instances or as a toast to everyone.

"Mabuhay" is not a greeting in the Philippines. It is similar to "Viva". People in the Philippines do not greet "mabuhay" to one another. It is a word for tourism and national pride and from history. They more commonly say "kamusta" , what is in origin "como esta"

Live!

Or, when used with specific people, "Mabuhay si Jose," it's like saying, "Long Live Jose!"

mabuhay doesn't mean hello or welcome. It smply means LONG LIVE!

When Pacquiao won and everybody was saying MABUHAY SI PACQUIAO, they din't mean WELCOME PACQUIAO nor did they mean HELLO PACQUAIO. It 's just too awkward that way.
