I have a USB external hard drive. Now when I turn it on the PC keeps saying it needs to be formatted. I have almost 30 Gb worth of files on there I would like to keep. Is there any way I can save the info on it?

This is a failure in your Drive, I would ask you whether you tried it on another computer, cause if it works, then its a problem with your USB, any way if you tried it on another computer and it failed also, then you must try this software for recovering your files, don't format it or copy any thing new on it

download getdataback, and try it, if it failed also, then contact me for more solutions.

You can cross your fingers and try it in a different computer to see if it can be read. If you get the same thing then yes, you do have to reformat to make it usable again. There one one problem with that, however, the message may be incorrect and your drive may be unusable no matter what you do.
