I'm doing a speech that was asigned to me. I had no choice over the the topic on what I was givin.

I would like everyone to read this and give me their honest opinion.

My speech is on homosexuality. I am to present to the class that homosexuals can change their sexuality back to being straight. I'm not sure how I can start this topic. I would like everyones input on this topic. Can someone who is gay become straight? What are their reasons why they can do this?

It isn't possible for someone to change his/her sexual orientation any more than it is possible to change eye color. It is an inate trait, not merely a behavior.

Someone can pretend to be straight, even going as far as marrying someone of the opposite gender.

It works the same way for "becoming gay" as well. Someone who is inately straight cannot become gay just by hanging out with gay people, or even by making out (or more) with someone of the same sex.

And just because I'm curious... why?

If I were you, I would start the speech saying that by stating that, I am not an expert on this topic and that the focus of my speech will be other studies or experiments in changing sexuality.
You could then do a couple of summaries of these studies or experiments.
As for whether it's really poss to change sexual orientation: who knows because it's such a complicated area of human life. I mean, prisoners are known to take up gay relationships while they are in the clanger. On the other hand, some gay people have one-night stands with the opp sex from time to time.
On top of which, there are bisexuals like Angelina Jolie who are in serious hetero relationships.
It's too complicated.

Research has been done into so called ex-gay/reparative therapy. Unfortunately, the data is dubious. The "therapists" operate under the belief that homosexuality is a disorder, and the clients are usually under immense pressure to report "success". The groups don't operate under current psychological guidelines, and their research doesn't conform to modern standards e.g. the requirement to use a control group, and also conforming to modern ethics.

Success claims are hard to verify, since the client is usually under pressure to comply with the program. Also, the "initial sexual orientation" of the client hasn't been properly verified and it has probably resulted in bisexuals being mislabelled as homosexual, or people who merely have "homosexual like traits" but weren't homosexul to begin with.

Despite the above, the best case study was "Spontaneous reversal of homosexuality after overcoming interpersonal anxiety" by Joseph Wolpe. This is about a client who "changed" their sexual orientation after overcoming interpersonal anxiety, despite the fact that their therapist Wolpe didn't believe a change in sexual orientation to be possible. Nowadays, experts would probably question whether the client was truly homosexual to begin with.

Others believe any "changes" in sexual orientation to be naturally occurring i.e. not the result of therapy. Also, bisexuals often report changes in their sexual orientation (usually a shift on the Kinsey scale). So all in all, its a grey area.

It may be possible for some people to experience changes in their sexual orientation. Even if they do, it doesn't mean that homosexuality is any kind of disorder.

Is this a debate assignment? If so, try this.
State beforehand or wait until after the speech to say to the class that you don't agree with the viewpoint you were assigned. I would wait until the end, since I'm assuming it's a debate. As for arguments, BS them. You don't have to believe in them, after all! Just say things like "praying to God will change your sexuality, since He can cause miracles to happen. If Jesus can make a blind man see, he can make a gay man straight!" If religion is inappropriate for this project, state that "aversion therapy" could help. Or better yet, state castration will help dampen sexual urges in general. Lobotomy could also help. These last two points will also gently mock your topic, while still staying within the bounds of the assignment. As for reasons, state "being accepted in society" and "contributing to the diversity of the gene pool." It doesn't matter if these arguments are pure bullshit: presenting them doesn't mean you believe in them!

Being a Homosexual myself and knowing what most homosexuals are capable of, I would have to say yes. But not entirely. Someone who is gay can mask their homosexuality by convincing themselves that they are straight. But deep down inside they can never be straight, it's against their nature.

Have you ever heard of these older men after divorcing their wives or their wives dieing, coming out and saying that they are gay. Well I can't speak for them because I'm not one of them but I can almost 99% guarantee you that they knew they were gay LONG before they got married. But because of the mindset back then, and still today, they chose to mask their true feelings so they would not be persecuted by society for who they really are.

Ask yourself the same question. Could you, whatever your sexual orientation is, deny it and go the other way? If not, why couldn't you? Is not in your nature to do that correct? No one can choose and say "I'm going to be Heterosexual" or "I'm going to be homosexual". But if someone was pushed and constantly persecuted for something they do, they could teach themselves to not do it. Just think about it. If there was a heterosexual holocaust and everyone who was heterosexual was going to be killed and have their children taken away from them, wouldn't you think most heterosexuals would mask their true feelings so people would just leave them alone? But there would be some heterosexuals who would stand up and say "I'm proud to be heterosexual and I don't care what people think."

It's the same way would homosexuals. So to answer your question: Yes, a gay person can learn to be straight, if their family or people they care about won't accept their lifestyle, on the outside. But their rainbow torch is still burning, however dim it may be, on the inside.

I highly doubt your professor assigned you this topic as it is highly controversial and touchy. That is like telling someone they need to debate that someone can wake up one day and change the color of their hair or the color of their eyes. Sure they can dye their hair or put colored contacts in, but all they are doing is hiding what they truely are. You can't change your sexuality either way.

it quite is a no longer a decision or morally incorrect. If it quite is a decision, then all heterosexuals made the choice to be as we communicate. It does not artwork like that. And the 30% who declare it morally incorrect (and the seventy 8% crowd) are bible-thumping christians. i'm no longer stunned.

you can't do this assignment. its not true. its like doing an assigment saying that you can stop a genetic disorder by not talking to your parents.
I'd report your teacher.

the noly thing you could possibly write is that people can pretend to be straight and have emotional and mental problemns for the rest of their lives unless they commit suicide- which theres a chnce they might
