I looked at the back of my DirecTV satellite receiver, and I noticed that it has a USB connection. Hackers/Computer professionals, why is it that I cannot connect my computer to my satellite and have a DSL? I may be an idiot for asking, and I accept that in advance lol, because I have a feeling that it isn't quite as easy as my small brain thinks it is. My frustration comes from the "molasses in January" style dialup connection that I am forced to still have, and also because I have very little hair left to pull out....Thanks so much for your help, friends.

Satellite internet is EXTREMELY expensive. You aren't able to just hook up to the receiver either. Satellite internet requires a special dish that has both a high-powered sender and receiver on it. And, you can't just "hack in" to the DirecTV network to get an internet signal. The provider must give you a static IP address and a special router/server in order to be able to communicate with the satellite.

You would have to sign up and pay for the service. I believe that satellite internet uses the phone line for uploads and the satellite for downloads. I'm sure someone will correct me if I am wrong.

I found this acticle from Oct 2004.

DirecTV is giving up on its Internet-by-satellite service. In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, DirecTV said it would take a charge of up to $1.6 billion to write down the value of its so-called Spaceway project.

The web site still shows it being offered by a private company.
