I've used Spybot Search & Destroy along with Ad-Aware se Personal by Lavasoft for YEARS with FANTASTIC results!!!
Spybot Search & Destroy lookes for a MYRIAD of different types of mal-ware. It gives GREAT real time protection with it's "Tea Timer" function within SS&D's "Advanced Mode". It takes care of cookies, cache and (and in the Advanced mode) other unwanted files. It also protects your Home Page settings in the Advanced Mode as well.

Ad-Aware se Personal (free version) gives no real-time protection, but it DOES do a super job of mopping up what little SS&D MIGHT miss. For that reason I run it after SS&D.
Download A-A se P from here:

Once you have them installed on your computer UPDATE them! And then adjust the settings in each one to suit your needs and then run SS&D, after which, you will then run A-A se P.

http://www.emsisoft.com download their free A2Squared Malware,
http//www.lavasoft.com Download their free for home use Ad-Aware Se Personal.
http://www.superantispyware.com Download thier free version.
All of the above scan all 207,000 objects in my system. The last one will not protect you from rogue dialers. (I used ADSL, but sttil want the added protection).

Go to download.com and get Ad-Aware and Spybot - search and destroy. Both free and contantly updated.
P.S. AVG will not be free after January 15 and anyway it is mainly a virus scanner
