Unfortunately, when that idiot Pronger left town, so did a lot of their flexibility. And not just on defense. The amount of minutes that he logged ,coupled with his ability to push the puck, enhanced the effectiveness of thier forwards exponentially. Spacek's loss is a big one too.
I do think the goaltending is leaps and bounds ahead of where it was last year and that, as far as "stay-at-home" defense goes, the Oilers' blue liners are actually pretty good.
This team could scrape in like last year if they pick up the pace (which I expect), but, unless an offensive minded defenseman is added, it is unlikely that Edmonton will advance at all.

No, the Oilers made it to the cup last year because the best western conf teams lost their stride just a little to soon. I would've been surprised to see such a good team such as Carolina lose to them.

God I hope so!!! They have all the elements in place, great scoring, great goalie, pretty good defense, one of the best coaches in the league and also a damn good GM in Kevin Lowe. They just need to get more consistent and stop losing to the worst teams (4-0 to Columbus?!?!?) and then they'll do fine. If they can just make it into the playoffs, they'll explode into the team they are destined to be.

No. They let the nucleus of their team go in players like Pronger, Peca and Spacek (thanks for Spacek by the way---he's great!).
The Oilers were fun, fun, fun to watch last year, but it will take a near miracle to repeat that run.

Maybe they will if they quit losing to ridiculously bad teams like COLUMBUS!
