Conservative and liberal are usually descriptions of someone's social politics, at least as they are usually used in the gay community.

Social conservatives are generally anti-abortion, anti-same sex marriage, anti welfare, etc. Social liberals are pro-choice, pro marriage, pro helping the poor, etc.

Generally speaking, many social conservatives vote along Republican party lines, while social liberals tend to vote with the Democrats. There are some exceptions, such as the Log Cabin Republicans, a group of gay Republicans who are generally economic conservatives, even if they are social liberals.

In Canada, we have a Conservative party and Liberal party; the conservatives are most like the Republicans, and the Liberals (ostensibly) more like the Democrats.

But as a general consensus, conservative tends to be socially traditional and economically free-market. Liberal tends to be socially more open and free, but favours more government intervention in the economy.

Conservative is someone with extremely republican leanings, who usually is against abortion, against Affirmative action, against gay marriage, pro-business, ans is for the integration of religion in government and in schools (not all conservatives believe in every point, but most believe in at least one or two.) A liberal tends to be for gay rights, for the environment, pro-abortion, and tends to favor a socialistic state (not socialist, not communist. Socialist means the government runs some parts of the economy, such as medicaid and medicare. Communism means the ENTIRE ECONOMY is run by the government.)

republicans = conservative
democrats =liberal

but both parties are in the middle of the political spectrum (that measure what is conservative or liberal) thrid parties are either lib or con, so many people don't say republican or democrat bcause some are associated with other parties or are partyless

(And don't you DARE give me another 'best answer' for that! People will talk.)
