I think that most amercans right now are right-wing (if you compare to Europe and other countries). This depends of course of the current leaders and the current movements in society.
For example:
When America was founded, it was (always compared to the rest of the world) very, very, very liberal. In fact, it was the only liberal nations, together with France.
America evolved to the right until the great depression, were it made a small turn to the left, ...
Right now America is a lot more liberal than 6 years ago (causes are of course Iraq), but they still tend to be right orentated

The majority of the American people are suprisingly in the middle, however, extreme times and persuavie leaders have led many people with a centrist view on politics to one side or the other.

The largest majority of Americans are moderate. The reason people seem to think there are more extremists(right or left) is because they are more vocal and demanding. The moderate majority go about their daily lives too busy making a living and raising their kids to pay a lot of attention to either side or to respond to them. Thats why we are called the silent majority.
