Could an illness or something else show that certain people don't want to be near you anymore because they think that you've "changed"?

You ever heard of the term, 'Friends through thick and thin'? Thats what your friends are supposed to do. If anyone can't stand by you when you are at your worst or when life hands you the worst, then they are not worthy of being called friends.

Yes, it can. Try an illness such as AIDS... And try this situation (it's true, I was there). The guy you all think you know and can appreciate and generally like... turns out to be a child molester... now what? I must confess, I've found it extremely difficult to want to go near him... yet, he's a person, he needs friends, right? Uffda- In my heart and mind, I sincerely wish him the best (that he get help, face the music and survive) but I have little nieces and nephews... I can't stand the thought of him being on the same planet as them... Was I a true friend? Probably not. Did the situation prove it? Certainly.

In my life it's this. I suffer sever bipolar depression. When I am "up" everyone loves for me to be around..they want to be my friend but when I am down and I need them..where are there. They don't call, or come visit..they disappear off the face of the earth. They don't know me..but hey, when I come back to "up", it's "I was thinking of you, are you feeling better" yeah right...That's why I was in the hospital for 2 weeks after attempting suicide and you never called once to check on me..It's then when I know who my true friends are..and you know what...I always find out that It's usually those who say "I am always there for you no matter what that are not there for me"...

yes, some people are just friends with you out of convinience, when I was in High School, this girl became really good friends with me to get at one of my friends, when they broke up i guess she decided we didnt need to be friends anymore. Some people are really very shallow and will not give a crap about you when something happens, its the ones that do that count.

Yes; sometimes life occurences can show you people's true colours. I recently discovered my 'best friend's' true colors when I needed assistance with something serious.

Absolutely!
Friends will stick around with you, even though it's uncomfortable.
Unless of course you HAVE changed and become so unbarable that you owe them an apology, no one can be expected to stick around under that circumstance. Everyone has issues!
