It's a result of environment, both social and physical. Cultural systems are the result of a specific group's needs in a certain place and time. Also, culture is holistic, which means that each part is connected to make a coherent system; to understand one part of a given culture, you have to look at how it fits in with the rest of that culture. In addition to this, there's the idea of enculturation, which is the transmission of culture from one generation to the next. This is a process that begins with birth and continues throughout life. By the time you're fairly young and able to understand most of what's going on around you, you have internalized many cultural norms and mores, such that they seem natural. This process is exceedingly hard to stop or alter, especially at the more fundamental levels, which are more deeply connected to other parts of a culture (going back to the idea of a holistic system).

You can't live the same way in Alaska as you would in Hawaii, particularly if you are in a preindustrial society. Plus, people have different ideas and experiences, so they end up with different traditions and ideas. For instance, when people finally figured out the sex = babies thing, some cultures forced women to be completely celibate until they married in order to insure a man raised his own children, while others put the woman's brother in charge of her kids, on the theory that, hey, at least they're a quarter his.

It starts with a dream about different horses. Some horses are jet black and can run really fast,like a jet filled with nitro. Some horses are brown and they love to eat,good food. Some horses are white with black stripes and are created to attract all the other beautiful horses in the field. Some horses are just plain white, however it maybe, these kind are giving the greatest gift ever: They have white wings to match their bodies. These are all my favorite horses and they astonish me so.
