I live on a college campus. I found an iPod in a computer lab. I kept it and put up a sign saying I found it. But, since ANYONE can just see the sign and call me and say, "Yeah, that iPod's mine," even if it's not theirs, I wrote on the sign:

E-mail [my address] with the following information:
- model of iPod
- 5 songs on the iPod (beginning with "A" for convenience)
- any engravings, covers, decorations

Do you think that's reasonable? Or is there a better test that I could use? How should I arrange for us to meet to return the iPod? What do I do if nobody responds, or none of the respondants pass the test?

It has to be sufficient to weed out the liars, but lenient enough for the actual owner to be able to do.

I agree, raise the number of songs, because there are a few popular ones likely to be on everybody's iPod. Also, ask them to name 5 artists that don't include the songs above. And finally, don't tell them to e-mail your regular address because they could spam you.

And good job on being honest. But if nobody claims it, say, within 2 weeks, I guess it's yours.

I think that's a very good way to make sure it's theirs. Of course if they can't remember the first few songs (I can't but I can remember the artists i have on there) i think you should ask them to name 10 artists that they have on there. Make sure than you say that 3 of them have to be of a different genre than the other 7 or else you might have someone just guessing all rap artists or something like that.

If they don't claim it soon, though, I think you were reasonable enough with your notices that you can keep it.

Sounds good. Your doing a good job and hopefully the real owner sees your sign and gets it. It's nice to know that good people still walk the earth.

I think you've covered all the bases. The real owner shouldn't have any trouble answering those questions.

No, that's actually pretty good. Keep in mind that the owner may not remember every little scratch or sticker on it, but as long as it's pretty accurate, you've done the best you can. Thanks for being so careful!
