Isn't it suppose to be a soreign countries.

Although Italy was Germany's ally, Hitler had liitle faith in the ability of the Italian military to aid his war effort, and when the British/American invasion of Scily took place in 1944 he felt he had to re-inforce his southern flank in Europe.

The role of the German army deployed into Italy was:

a) to make sure Mussolini didn't change his mind about being an ally.

b) Good entry into Jugoslavia, France, Austria and (if need be to Switzerland)

c) To help Italy deal with the Partisans (anti-fascist freedom fighters)

German troops initially were in Italy as allies, though experience had shown that the Wehrmacht was needed to "put some backbone" in their allies as much as to fight with them. But then Italy changed sides in mid-war when German troops were still present in much of the country, so they became occupiers somewhat by default.

The same as it was in any other place they marched into: the spread of nazism and facism. Italy was an ally to them, although they did conduct themselves a bit differently.

I believe it was to secure the south of Europe against Allied entry. Being a sovereign nation really doesn't mean much when you are at war...............
