Oh Pullman by far, He is leaps and bounds above Rowling his imagery is fantastic stories are brilliant and original philosophical intelligent, unlike Rowling who takes a lot of her ideas from Tolkien without even being subtle about it. . Not just talking about his dark materials which are wonderful but ruby in smoke etc. The characters are believable and yet different he allows for such depth of imagination where as Rowling tends to give you it on a plate i think not much scope for that deep thinking. However, in terms of age range Pullman's dark materials is suitable for older readers where as younger people could read Rowling easily. Not to be forgotten are Pullman's other books before his dark materials he has easier reads which have just as much brilliant imagery.

For children, I'd say Rowling.

But fiction in general, Pullman, hands down.

Pullman's writing is very intricate, the plots are insanely complicated, and there's also theology and deeper meanings. I think children would miss these things.

Rowling tends to stay on the surface with regular old character development and stuff that younger audiences can grasp.

And Pullman's books have very different messages for young readers and old readers.

Well they're both GREAT authors! I prefer JK Rowling. She has been through such hard times and she was still able to do what she did. She is a really good author! I love her and her books, and she wasn't handed it on a golden plate. She is STILL making books and is so smart at all of that stuff and has a brilliant mind. She is so talented. There are many things about her, and i think she might be more well known. Shes cool and i like her alot. Thats what i think. Her books are really good too. Its a hard choice, but I choose Rowling.

I'd really hate to choose. Both of them are so in tune with the world/worlds they've created, and have such a thorough knowledge and understanding of their long-term ongoing plots that they're able to seed clues in one book to something that will happen a book or two later - something I especially enjoy. (I really hate it when a sequel is written to a book that, originally, had no further episodes planned - the new storyline can feel forced and often ends up feeling so contrived). Because both JK and PP knew what would happen on the last page of their final book in the series, even before they wrote the opening sentence of the first book, the reader can feel confident that they know where the story if going.
Putting personal preference aside, I don't think there should ever be a definitive "best". Writing isn't a competitive sport; there's nothing wrong with appreciating the work of two talented authors equally.

Philip Pullman is certainly a more talented writer but I heard that he is a bit embittered about Rowling's popularity and acclaim.

That's unfortunate.

For children? Probably Rowling. I prefer Pullman myself, though.

Oranges or apples. Apples or oranges.. hmm..

I think you will only be able to ask which one wrote the BEST children's fiction when JKR has written something other than the Harry Potter series.

But on a personal level I'd say JKR because it's like I've seen Harry grow up. While PP's books are great, he hasn't developed a character in the same way and none of them make me think 'oh, wow, what's going to happen next'?

Harry on the other hand... roll on Book 7!!!

JK wrote the better children's fiction. Which is why she is so adored by kids all over the world, far more than pretentious Pullman.

J.K. Rowling. She writes Harry Potter in lots of fantastic ways! I don't know any about Philip Pullman. His name sounds familiar though. I might have heard it somewhere before.
