Where do you buy the oil for a rain lamp? Or what other oil will work in one? I have had some folks tell me to use cooking oil and then I have had some tell me that is the worst thing that we could use. So I would like to know where or what kind to get so at least my mom could enjoy her rain lamp while she is still with us. I have looked at Wal-Mart and even asked them for it and they say they don't sell it. So what do I do?

I did look on the lamp to see what it kind it took and then went to the hardware store and asked, they say they don't sell that weight. Nobody at the stores have been able to help me yet.

This is a rain lamp....it has no wick in it. It is just several strings that goes from top to bottom that the oil runs down the string to make it look like it is raining..hence.."rain lamp". She got this from Christmas last year. It was new, it came from Wal-Mart, it's the one with the dolphins in it. But they don't sell the oil that is used in it.

Didn't think anyone still had one. We were told way back when to use mineral oil. I think you could try a craft or hobby store?
The mineral oil won't go bad on you, like cooking oil, would get rancid.

I just did a little checking. Apparently Walmart sells mineral oil.
Have fun. We loved our lamp.

I'm not sure if you have a Dollar General store in you area. But they carry lamp oil. Or check at a store that specializes it lighting.
We had one of these when I was a kid, they are so pretty. I hope this will help and you can find it for your mom. Also check anywhere that they sell the old time lanterns or candle lamps.I would check at a candle store. And if you can't find it I would think baby oil would be better than cooking oil. Good luck to you. I know what kind of lamp you are refering to. They have candles that use the same type of oil.

Don`t use any cooking oil, my wife used it once and it took hours to clean them. I have tried vacume pump oil and it`s to thin and smells. If the oil is to thin it will come over the side at the top of the lamp. Trial and error will have to do.

A light cooking oil would be just fine. Just be certain to keep the wick very low so you do not produce soot, that would darken the ceilings and walls.
