If it is plugged in and the volume turned up (master volume and volume dials) and you cannot hear any amplification then you may have a bad patch cord or a bad amp. Has the amp been used before? If not, have a guitar playing friend try their guitar and your patch cord. If you have heard the amp used before then the trouble lies elsewhere.
If you are looking for distortion then youy need to buy a distortion box or the cheap/easy way is to turn up master volume and turn volume up slightly.
