The temporary and superficial pleasure of anything new. We live in a world age of activity rather than peace, change rather than either tranquillity or laziness.
You can see this by asking 'what gets books published' (or movies screened). Out of 1000 submissions, only one or a few get published. It is the ones that are exciting, thrilling, penetrating, fill (for the moment) voids in readers' hearts. A few give hope and joy and renew our faith in human possibility. Most are sexy (most people find sex exciting), many are violent, and words like "fast-paced" are used by critics as terms of approbation (for both novels and films). People briefly satisfy vicariously through the characters desires that they cannot or dare not fulfil in "real" life, such as to hunt and kill (mostly males), to be swept off their feet by a gorgeous lover (mostly females), to adventure, to find (and maybe lose) fame and fortune, to achieve success after overcoming obstacles or against the odds. We are as humans naturally creative and full of imagination, and books and films allow us to use and feel our imaginations to some extent -- without having to do all the hard work ourselves. (In dreams we can create worlds instantly, but in this world it is hard work even to write a book.)
We have simultaneously, as humans, conflicting fundamental desires for adventure, fun, and challenge (essentially yang) -- driven ever onward by what Carl Rogers calls our "actualizing tendency" -- and for safety (essentially yin) -- driven by the illusion that "we" are vulnerable because our bodies are. So we love in our imaginations (our invincible True Selves) to accompany Frodo to Mordor and the Crack of Doom, but how many of us, actually presented on Planet Earth with a Ring and a Quest, would undergo the ardour and danger of the journey? How many of us would actually be willing to make a fool of ourselves in front of our peers by trying to pull a sword out of a stone? Our lives may be constrained by the mortgage and the 7.52 train from Ponders End, but the all-mighty potential that is our hearts and minds can never be compressed out of existence, and the soap opera, movie, book, podcast, calls this potential, however slightly, out of slumber, the silent whisper of the Infinite speaking "as star to faint star across the sky" (Azimov).
