This is a Pagan custom passed down from Baal worshippers. In the Old Testament you read about them cutting a tree out of the forest & decking it with silver & gold.It has nothing to do with Christianity.

i might use sparkling lights - as quickly as I grew up we had genuine candles on the real Christmas tree. human beings went into the woodland and decrease the terrific tree they could locate. The tree reducing replaced into performed in the morning of Christmas eve.. that they had little snap-on candle holders. i do no longer understand why I in no way heard of timber or properties burning. We had 2 white candles burning on each window sills. We consistently had a white Christmas returned then, now it could no longer snow till January. Tree adorns have been made up of paper cutouts and straw figures shaped with crimson yarn. lights out, the sparkling aromatic tree with the candles burning, the straw sheep and angels in a golden glow, all and sundry making a song Christmas carols - oh properly - no longer something replaced into ever returned as enchanting as that replaced into for a 5 3 hundred and sixty 5 days old. The sparkling lights ring a bell in me of those cases previously. I relatively have them on the domicile outdoors. each thing is basically too plastic right this moment so i do no longer beautify plenty for Christmas interior. purely a gaggle of candles and sparkling poinsettia everywhere. No Christmas tree.

It goes back to the days before street lighting when people would put candles or other lights in the front window to light the way for those passing by. Back home in Ireland, long after street lighting came in, my Mother would always put a large 'Christmas' candle in the front window throughout Christmas as 'a sign of welcome'..

Its just a stupid way to show that you are better than your neighbours, familly and friends.
The more lights you have, and the bigger they are, shows how perfect you are.
If you put up loads in the garden santas climbing on the roof, reindeer everywhere and the odd waving snowman, then it means you are the bestest person in the neighbourhood.

If you don't put up any, you are a looser.

At least that's what I think it means, or else why would people go to so much trouble?

Dunno, maybe in the beginning it symbolised the bright star over Bethlehem, now it just seems to be an excuse for Chav's parents to stick them all over the outside of the house and think they look good, when really they just look like a pile of cheap plastic with bulbs inside.
