When you try to connect to another computer, the destination computer needs to authenticate you. If you log onto your PC's with no password, or with a different username and password, then it can't verify you are supposed to have access, thus it prompts you for an account that does.

The best thing to do is to set up a user account on BOTH PC's that have the same username and password. (You MUST use a password, you can't leave it blank). Then just make sure you always log onto both PC's with the same username and password and that prompt should go away.

Hi!

First, there is NO problem with your LAN.
Just enable file sharing, on each computer.
Secondly... that password issue...
When you installed Win XP or 2k you were asked for an administrator password... You DID NOT left those fields blank, did you? Never let those fields blank!

Make sure you only allow read-only access to your shares (by leaving the "Allow others to change my files" box blank).
Also, enabling file-sharing my cause security failures.
Keep that in mind!

Good luck!
