can eitrher use a console cable with it's interface or see if you router has a console port in the back.

A console port allows you direct access to the Cisco IOS. You can also purcahse a DB9 to RJ45 connector. One should have came with the router.

If you are connecting DB9 to DB9 you will still need to console cable. Once again it will allow you access to your IOS through a telnet session.

If you are going to connect to a USB port then you need software to do the translation for you. So there will be that extra piece for the connection. USB does not automatically to ethernet and it is the same with any device you will need softwere for the instructions.

Well to be honest you need a serial port. You do not only need an 'rj45 cable' as described in the other answers, but it needs to be a certain type. You need to build or buy a 'console cable.' If you build a console cable, instead of buying one, you will also need an rj45-db9 converter. You connect to the router via terminal like hyperterm.

Hi!

You can safely use the RJ45 to connect to it. RJ 45 is to be connected to your NIC (LAN card).

Good luck!
