The Big Brick Bakery sells more bagels when it reduces its prices, but then its profit changes. The function y = -1000 (x - 0.55) squared + 300 models the bakery's daily profit in dollars from selling bagels, where x is the price of a bagel in dollars. The bakery wants to maximize the profit.

oooyee .. now my question is what price should this bakery charge to maximize its profit from bagels ..confusion - no one i asked could get the answer. how did u get ur final answer? >_<

First you need to multiply out the function:

= -1000(x^2 - 1.1x + 0.3025) + 300

= -1000x^2 + 1100x - 302.5 + 300

= -1000x^2 + 1100x - 2.5

Then take the derivative:

= -2000x + 1100 = 0 for stationary points (highest points on graphs)

2000x = 1100

x = 0.55$

Hence they should sell their bagels at 0.55 dollars or 55 cents

Well, I dont think the situation has been very well modelled, with profits etc, but still, heres how I get the highest possible value of y.

y = -1000 (x - 0.55) squared + 300.

Right?

The important part is the -1000 x (x-0.55)squared.

Any number squared, will give you a positive number, right? And a negative number (-1000), multiplied by a positive number (the bracket squared), will always give you a negative number, right?

So, to get the highest value of y, you want to get the smallest negative number possible, right? That value would be 0. Understand?

So, to get 0, we want "-1000 x 0." Youre still with me, right?

To get "(x-0.55) squared" to equal 0, then the "(x-0.55)" must equal 0. Understand? And obviously, that only happens when "x=0.55."

So now that you have "-1000 (x-0.55) squared" equal to 0, you formula becomes:

y = 0 +300.

So your highest possible values are x = 0.55, and y = 300.

I hope you followed all that! =P

As for whoever created the question, its not a trig problem, and it doesnt make sense. Why would profits involve a -1000? =(
