-That's the best way I can describe how in some songs the beat starts out one way and, by a shift in the instruments, the timing of the beat seems to shift. Not really so much the timing, I guess, but the point that the beat 'hits' in each cycle. It's almost like those optical illusions where a picture of cubes seems to point one way then the other depending on what part you concentrate on. Is there a name for this? Am I making ANY sense?

it souns like your talking about a change up. It happens in so many ways. Sometimes one instrument will be changed slightly. Yet it's enough to change the whole beat. Most people use these to add suspense to a track. It gives the listener something to listen to instead of the beat just being monotanous.
