I've got a combi-boiler which has been working fine. It says its on full, but it keeps firing up then cutting out after 3-5 seconds. The radiors aren't even warm, and the water is just tepid. I've pressed reset, and I've turned the temperature dial.

It's a Britony Combi 80, I've looked at the online servicing manual, and it does seem I'll have to call a plumber. However this is a rented house, so for now we'll shall have to chill since the landlord has no out of hours service.

Thank you all for your advice, can I just say though, no more responses about the pressure being too low, that was the first thing I checked!! It's at just under 2. I wouldn't know how to top it up or do anything like that.

Sounds like what happens to me if I run out of oil before I get a fill.

The cause is an airlock in the pipe between the oil tank and the boiler. It usually causes the lockout light on my boiler to light, and pressing reset doesn't work - you have to bleed the boiler.

The men who deliver my oil do that for me - if you can't get them to do it, you'll have to call in a plumber - good luck with that!

I'm not an expert but we had an issue ourselves a few months ago.

Is there a pressure guage/dial on the boiler ?

If so, is the pressure above the 1 mark. Ofc all boilers are different, but our pressure has to be somewhere between 1 and 2.

For us there was a backboard to take away below the boiler, to reveal a turn screw on pipe, to turn and let some air in. However I wouldn't recommend turning any old stop valve screw and would wait for professional assistance.

britony boilers generally have a presure gauge, if it is on ''zero'' you can fill the system by using the'' fill loop'' they are generally below the boiler two taps with a flexible pipe between them, only one can be turned either by inserting a screwdriver (flat) into the slot or by turning a washing machine type valve turn the valve and you will hear water flowing into the system turn off the flow at 1 to 2 bars reset and it should work, you should get your landlord to check for a leak soonest (all work on a boiler should be done by a competent person so get it checked)

it sounds like the pressure is to low . there should be a loop with a small tap located near the boiler on the cold water supply pipe (to boiler) turn this on slightly and you will hear the pressure rising, look at the gauge on the boiler and turn the tap off at 2-3 bar and turn on boiler. hope this helps, if your not sure ask a friend!

have you checked the water pressure open the bottom of your boiler to check your settings if the wee Dial going from 1-60 bar is lower than one you have to put in more water the tap is usually under the sink well mine is just turn on and when the dial reaches 2bar turn of hope that solves the problem if not ask a friend

You need a new thermo-coupler. it's a sensor on the flame, if it isn't working the boiler doesn't know the flame is lit, and so shuts down to avoid gas escape. This is why it lights for a very short time. They are not expensive, but get a qualified engineer to fit it.
Hope this helps

Yep - all good answers, you could hopefully narrow it down to 2 problems - 1st is fuel, make sure gas or oil is being supplied 2nd and most probable is lack of pressure, look for a little guage and if it points to less than the red mark you need to fill it up. If it is that and you need help, IM me and l will assist.

Maybe your boiler haves to much mineral buildup have you tried draining your boiler and re filling it up again and seeing how it works
