Probably because Christmas has come to mean presents, Santa, trees, food, and decorations. I hardly know anyone anymore who goes to church around this time. It's been so commercialized that almost everyone can say "Merry Christmas" and have no religious meaning behind it. Sorry ahead of time folks.

Most athiests consider christmas to just be a celebration of the season (the snowy season), with icons like santa and the tree as being just fun symbols for little kids to believe in. The winter is cold and sad, and christmas makes it easier to get through. Actually, christmas was originally based on winter solstice and other roman practices. The whole christmas ritual does not seem to even have anything to do with jesus at all if you think about it. You have a big triangle shaped tree with a glowing star of david at the top (used in alchemy and freemasonic symbols) and you give presents with the idea of santa coming in through your chimney (???...where is jesus here?). If christmas was a celebration that used a big cross, priests blessings and we all read prayer...I probably wouldn't participate (it would be hypocritical). I also think part of the reason everyone celebrates xmas is because we have all been brainwashed to want to...I mean, everyone does it , and if you don't you are like scrooge or the grinch.

Christmas has evolved into a mostly secular holiday, so that its Latin definition is no longer a consideration. Christians still celebrate both the religious and secular aspects of the Day, but that is why we enjoy the freedom of choice. I personally prefer to hear Merry Christmas as opposed to Happy Holidays because it IS Christmas. Only federal workers and school children get the holiday.

Some just celebrate the holiday as a time to give things to other people and then use the expression because it's so common. They don't associate the saying with having religious significance.

because atheists celebrate christmas NOT becuz of jesus but becuz its a fun holiday and people like to get into it, and by the looks of things christians dont look at the religious aspect of it either, they claim to but they go out buy expensive gifts and give santa more credit then jesus anyway so they can go suck on a lemon!!

1) Christmas is such a big celebration in our country, it would be obtuse not to.
2) Unlike our friends on the other side of the argument, we are not all rabid zealots who won't accept people have other views.

As a muslim i wish athiests would stop saying this as well.

in 20 years parts of the UK will be mainly muslim anyway and this day will hardly be celebrated.

To many, the phrase is nothing more than a figure of speech. Although tolerance of others beliefs works for me too..

Some do, some don't.

Why? It's a traditional greeting. And it shows
respect for others' beliefs.

It's said in a secular way or said out of respect of who they are greeting.
