They are just federally funded highways. On the mainland, all the interstates start with "I-," but in Hawai'i they are labeled "H-." So, I guess they're not really called "interstate." There are only three, H-1 (linked Ft. Ruger (Diamond Head) to Barbers Point (as well as Pearl Harbor)), H-2 (links Pearl Harbor to Schofield Barracks), and H-3 (links Pearl Harbor to Kane'ohe Marine Corps Base). So it's only because of the military that we have these highways.

Guess the next step is linking Pearl Harbor to the bases in San Diego, huh? They should make a pneumatic tube tunnel. That'll cut down transportation time, plus that would be so fun. At least until you have to stop.

They generally DO connect states to one another, but their original purpose was (partially) to provide the military with the means to transport troops and weapons in the even of an invasion by foreign armies.

The US experience in Europe and later Korea and Vietnam convinced most government officials that we needed to be able to move around freely if we ever had to defend ourselves on our own soil.

We owe Hawaii the same benefits other states enjoy, especially due to their strategic importance. Their taxes help fund the Interstate Highway program, another reason they should be included.

Alaska isn't connected to any other state either... Should they not receive highway money?

They usually do run through more than 1 state. But the "interstate" highway system is the name given to the federal program that came up with money to build the roads

In New York there is an interstate highway that doesn't connect any other states and is only 2-3 miles long. That doesn't make any sense either.

It's for those people who are afraid to fly and can't afford a cruise to Hawaii, so they decide to drive instead.

This is a misnomer, they should be called intrastate highways
