Well, since they are taking the book and splitting it in half, perhaps they can tell the full story of it and not dump off characters for the sake of time considerations
But they will not proceed without Peter.
Just like Disney came back to Pixar, New Line will come back to Peter

Peter Jackson did a good job with the trilogy, so I wouldn't mind him directing the Hobbit. The story is perfectly fine to me. I last read the book maybe a year ago. The only thing I thought was a bit coincidental was the arrival of the Eagles. In the end of the Hobbit, and in the Return of the King, they just kind of show up to save the day. I remember Pippin in the movie crying out, "The Eagles are coming!" and I remember thinking, "There was not one mention of the Eagles except for when Gandalf escaped Sauruman in the first film."

They need to make the Wargs look more like wolves. They made them look like bears, I was a bit disappointed. Keep Peter Jackson, he's okay, and no don't edit the story! Yes, there's a few things that could be fiddled, but I think the story could be done quite nicely without major changes.

The book should be much easier to adapt and it does make sense for Peter Jackson to make it. He just needs to make it pacier, I found the second and third parts of the trilogy to slow paced with the ending dragged out for far too long. Also, when it comes on DVD, don't bleed the public dry with a million directors and box set versions.

Jackson tries way too hard to make the movie emotional. Frodo had to stop and cry like every five minutes. I wouldn't want the story edited at all. I haven't read the book for maybe 3 years.

Peter Jackson isn't the only writer/director in the world. Sam Raimi is the studio's choice and he's pretty good, he did the Spiderman movies after all.
