If not, is the dependent country committed to the defense of others, just to ensure its own survival?

Wouldn't it be feasible for countries to define a core set of products necessary for its own survival; be able to completely produce those products internally; and, still promote global trade?

If feasible, would the cost of restructuring ones economy be worth it over the risk of dependence upon others for your soverignty and survival?

Also, Epicurus wrote that self-sufficiency is the most important issue for freedom and independence!
