Technical question: I have cable modem service with RCN. My cable modem is a Scientific Atlanta DPC2100. When I boot up I have Internet access for a few minutes then none. If I reboot the cable modem I will get access again for a few minutes. If I ping say google, response times will be a speedy 17-30ms. But within a couple of minutes response times will bump up to 1000, 2000 even 4500ms and then pings will timeout altogether and it's then that Internet access is gone. On its own it sometimes comes back for a few minutes either with the high pings times sometimes with low. Sometimes the service will come back even for an hour or more. I have a tech coming out on Monday. But I wondered what the problem sounds like to folks. I know the problem is not between be and my router/access point as that connection is always 100% and under 1ms. And reseating the connection between the router and the cable modem never impacts connection.

Sounds like a software problem not a hardware one. You might want to try securign your router with a WEP or WAP pin just incase you aren't bleeding signal. You may have multiple computers accessing your router on accident if you live in an urban area say near a wi-fi hotspot. Other than that the only person to really fix the problem would be the tech.

Sounds to me like there is a problem with the cable itself coming from the Head-End. Does your cable TV have any fuzzy quality to it or just slightly degraded? If so then there is probably a loose connection or possibly even a wet connection between you and the cable pedestal. The tech should put a test set on the cable to verify the quality and strength of the RF signal that you are getting. If that checks out fine then it is entirely possible that your cable modem is just dying.

There are 2 things to check, the Modem it's self might be bad, or you have to much resistance in the cable line. The cable modem needs to be the first in line on the cable. Have the Tech check to make sure the modem is on the main incoming cable line.

You need to contact your cable service.
