You may wish to contact the Snell Memorial Foundation. They were set up in the 1950's after Pete Snell, a race car driver, died when his helmet proved ineffective. They've been a major force in the development of modern helmets, and if you email or call them, I'm sure they will be glad to send you information on their history.
