Well, well, I never expected to see a question about 'Doggie' on this site. I've often wondered, and you made me have a search. Apparently there are four possibilities:-

1. The iron ore tranported to the iron works from Rosedale was dug from a seam called 'The Dogger'

2.The iron works made fire irons, also known as 'fire dogs'

3. They also made an iron spike used on the railways and called 'a dog'

4. There were lots of dogs in the village

(the last I find a bit pathetic, although the source says it is favoured by most villagers)
