Almost all the original old stadiums were built right in the city centres, amongst houses where space was very limited, so the stands that were built simply kept as close to the pitch as possible. Liverpool's stadium is a good example of this..it is surrounded by small residential streets.

All the newly built stadiums in the last twenty years have been built in clear open areas with lots of space, which is why they are more oval in shape.

Actually, they are not square shaped. More rectangular shaped then sqaure. The stadiums are rectangular due to the field being rectangular, for optimum view a rectangular stadium is more efficient then a circular one. Although there are exceptions to a circular stadium holding a soccer or rugby field. But the main reason, is because again, the stadium correlates with the shape of the field.

Because the mojority of the Stadium was bullt before 1970's and thats how the builders designed them.
