I was watching discovery channel and a discussion was brought up about circumcision. I didn't know that women can get circumcized. I find that to be horrible. I know it's a cultural belief for some...but it's horrible to me. What are your thoughts???

Circumcision for men is thought by some to add hygeinic value (ie it is easier to keep the penis clean and infection free). This is now widely debated. Male circumcision does not seem to decrease men's sexual pleasure. In women, circumcision has never had any health benefit for the woman. It is a means patriarcal societies use to control women's sexual desires. By removing the clitoris, the woman has reduced (or no) sexual pleasure and (it is thought) they will be less likely to have affairs outside sanctioned marraige.

it is a horrible barbaric practice that is outlawed in America and most all countries in the world. it is even outlawed in most the countries it is practiced in (they just do not prosecute people for it). female genital mutilation causes many deaths. there is currently no research as to how many but it is not a question that it does. women or girls that go through it some times die from infections related to it. some will also die later in life when they attempt to deliver a baby that will not be able to pass through their mutilated genitals, this can lead to death for mother and baby. everyone no matter what gender, race, nationality, religion, ethnicity, any and all humans have a right (a basic human right) to intact genitals. no one has any right to do this to a person based on religious beliefs. i support peoples beliefs in choosing religion but when your belief is harming other people that is not acceptable. more needs to be done the world over to stop this horrible brutal practice.
edited to add... reading back over this i find many of you are ill informed about both forms of genital mutiltion. it is done to both male and females. in this coutnry the reasons we use for MGM (male genital mutilation) are the same ones given for the practise of FGM in other coutnries. MGM has no benifits either, it was belived to sevral decades ago but now medical information has shown that there is no medical need or purpose for it... for this reason no medical organization recomends it. some doctors that were taught many years ago may because that is what they were taught, this is outdated information. go do some reserach on both forms of genital mutilation.

It is a horrific form of domination over women. Unfortunately, in a male dominated culture where women are considered nothing more than property, it continues without much protest. Hopefully more programs like the one you saw will help bring more public awareness to this form of mutilation.

Yes I am also against the practice and I feel for the women that it is forced upon.

For that matter I'm not fond of male circumcision either.

It's mutilation for a male or a female. We were not born with "Extra" anything. There is a purpose for everything we were born with. Just because we have not figured it out, or don't agree with it doesn't mean it's ok to just cut it off or have it removed. If a person want's to do it to themselves then that is their choice. A parent who makes that choice for their child is no better than a butcher.

even though it is illegal now, it is still a barbaric practice in some countries. Usually in small towns and villages where the law isn't that visible. Mostly in Africa, Asia and yes, until recently, even in the USA and Europe.
The 2 practices (male/female) are quite dissimilar. For women, it is used a tool of control and to curb desire.

it is horrible. and it should be called circumcision. we don't cut off the whole penis on guys- not if the hood of the clit was removed it would be circumsision. it would also be pointless since there is no benefit to anyone and it can actually be discomforting to women with hypersensitive clits. now with males circumcision decreases the risk of bacterial infections.

Its basically to curb the saxual desire and this is what is against the ethics and religion too. Men are circumcised to increase the sexual efficiency than why women are denied from that. In my opinion its in appropriate.

Male circumcision is the only one that is really beneficial.

Its awful and it is, as a cultural belief, equivalent to sex offences.
