What type of fish are safe to have in the tank with baby fish. We have about 20 convict babies, the tank looks really boring, so we wanted to add some color, but my roommate says most adult fish will eat the babies.

It mostly depends on how big the tank is. 20 convicts babies will soon grow into 20 convict adults that can grow up to 5 or 6 inches each. Unless you have a 400 gallon tank (since adults need about 20 gallons each), you 're going to have to sell or give away some of the fish you already have, and adding MORE fish to the mix will make it even more complicated. Basically, I don't recommend adding any more fish, and eventually you're going to need to get rid of some of the fish you already have.

That said, convicts do welll with most other cichlids, barbs (although tigers are pretty agressive), catfish, chinese algae eaters, sharks, knifefish, or rainbowfish. However, I would not recommended adding anymore to your community for safety reasons until the fry have grown to at least a couple inches.

You could get some type of bottom feeder, most wont harm baby fish.
