I have an Pentium 4 2.6 GHz socket 478, Intel D865GLC motherboard, 512MB of RAM(DDR-333),a ATX 250 Watt power supply, and an 80GB hard drive, with no dedicated sound card or GPU. I already know I need to upgrade my RAM( it can support up to DDR-400) to a GB. It is currently running Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition and I am planning of upgrading it to Windows Vista Premium.

Another thing. I went to my motherboards specifications overview on Intel, and it said something about "Two Serial ATA IDE interfaces". Is that SATA or not? The computer is a Gateway computer that is 2 years old as well.

Hi!
+512 MB RAM (minimum)
400 W ATX power supply
HDD up to 250 GB (if using SATA/ SATA 2 try 720GB!!!)
Video, any newer card with 256/512 MB RAM DDR or RDRAM on AGP or, if you have one, 16x PCI Express Port.
Sound: Sound Blaster Audigy Pro, or newer.
Gigabit Ethernet LAN Card form SMC, or compatible.
Optical: DVD-RAM or DVD-RW. Teac or Plextor. Assus should also be fine.
Good luck!

1 gig of ram would help, 2 gig would be better. ddr-400 wont speed you up enough to makie it worth the expense unless you can sell you ddr-333 for about the same price. you can replace your CPU with a faster P4 if you like. a Dedicated video card would help with some games but not necessary for much else. the on board sound can be left alone if working properly. If your hard drive is 50% empty or more it should be fine. If you require more speed the best upgrade you can do is swap out that 80 gig drive add in a Serial-300 speed hard drive controller and a 300 speed hard drive. good luck and happy computing.

If u r planning on Installing Windows Vista , then u Should have a Decent Mid range Graphics Card , for example Nvidia Geforce 6600 , 80 GB Hard Disk would be enough , but if ur planning on playing games a 160 GB Hard Disk is Preferrable ,U dont need HD Sound cards or High End Sound cards , it will consume high processing power , A creative XI-FI Xtreme 7.1 channel for abt 35-40 $ is a good decent sound card

If you don't do any gaming then I would suggest you find the cheapest video card with dedicated memory that you can. On board video uses your main memory and will block off an amount that is unusable by the system. Some of them as much as 64MB or 128MB. You could check in your BIOS and set this to 8MB if you want/can. This would allow more system memory to be used by your OS.
If you are doing some gaming then I would look for a cheap used video card like a 6800 GT or something, it will be far better than the onboard card.

Sounds like an OEM to me.. Dell 2400..... Anyways I would put a NVidia 6200LE PCI if you don't have an AGP or PCi-E. I would also put at least 1GB Ram and then lastly I would put at least a 100GB hdd because vista will take up like 20GB just for system files... And now your system is Vista Compatible at the lowest money spent.
