Would it work?

Not using anti-virus ... if I got one ... just use the the recovery CD.
I keep on external hard drive the most important files.

that will usually do it unless its a really nasty virus that got into the lowlevel part of the disk or the bios ......

Nope! Your, external files might also be corrupted, and you don't have an AV to determine if it's so or not! Reconsider using some AV.
