Physically, hook up like this:

Internet
II
Router ==== PC1
II
II
PC2

At this point, both computers should be able to get on the net. Its really that simple. Now, do you want to take it to the next level by sharing printers and files? If so, do the following.

In both computers, run the network configuration wizard by opening "My Network Places" then clicking on "Set up a home or small office network" on the left side (Network tasks).

Both computers need to be set up "connect to the internet through a network hub along with other computers" (you have to click "other" first to get this option.

Also both need the same workgroup name (be somewhat unique - dont just say HOME). Each computer needs a unique PC name.

Enable file and printer sharing. At the point where it asks you to save a configuration disk, say no just complete the wizard. You will have to restart both computers.

Now on both computers, you need to open the control panel > Folder Options > View tab. The very first item needs to be checked (automatically search for network folders and printers). The very last item (Use simple file sharing) needs to be UNchecked.

Both computers should have EXACTLY the same username and password for any accounts that are to be shared.

At this point, all you have to do is enable sharing for folders and printers. Right click on the printer or folder to share. Select "Sharing and security". Click on share this folder/printer and give it a name. Click on the "Permissions" button and add the name of the other user with whatever rights you want to give them (self explainatory) by clicking on "Advanced" and "find now". Make sure you remove "everyone". The folder and/or printer should automatically show up in their "my network places" window.

Have fun!

reckoning on the area between the two computers, you may the two set up a under pressure community with a swap or router, or a on the spot community with a on the spot router an d between the computers related on the spot. the two way i might propose which you get a on the spot router and connect it to between the DSL modems (the standard one you p.c. to apply). The router would desire to have a minimum of four ports on the decrease back which you will connect your computers to by employing means of a Cat5 cable. If between the computers is a robust distance away you will would desire to place in a on the spot card so it could connect devoid of working the cable the full distance. There are 2 hyperlinks under, strategies you those are decent kit yet there are extra inexpensive obtainable techniques.

It's hard to say without knowing your operating system. If you're using Windows XP, it's quite easy:

You'll need a router to share your internet connection between the two computers.

Once your router is installed and working correctly, simply run the "Network Setup Wizard" from within the Windows Control Panel on each computer. Answer a couple of questions therein and you should be good to go.

The easiest way to do this is to get a router. Connect both computers to the router, and connect the router to your broadband connection. Enter your connection details into the router, and voilà!
