Or to state it more clearly, do you think it was an intentional cheap shot?
I'm almost certain that Ovechkin came at Daniel Briere from behind with the intention of hurting him. Briere was just ending his shift, clearly about to climb over the boards, but hockey's golden child felt it neccessary to knock him head first into the door of the bench. I'd like to punch his under-bite ridden teeth out.

It looked like a cheap shot but I don't think the intent was to hurt.
The only one who could answer this is Ovechkin himself.
It appears he knew right away he goofed. He had to know the guy was going off for a change and had let his guard down. Isn't there an area near the bench that's considered off limits for checking? In a way, he was "off" the ice because his replacement was already "on" the ice.

So I take it you're a Crosby fan? Relax bud, it's not like you're an NHL player who has to worry about this kind of stuff happening to you. It was a cheap shot, sure. But Darcy Tucker also knocked a guy into the boards last night as well. Are you just as mad about that? It was no less dirty than Ovechkins hit. But since Briere is hurt NOW it becomes a big deal. If it had been some nobody hitting another nobody, it wouldn't be talked about. But it was one of the best young stars hitting another great player so it's a big deal. These need to be taken out of the game, I agree. But don't go around saying you'd like to punch so and so in the head for something that has absolutely no impact on your life; it's only a game. You're not going to die because of a cheap shot on someone you don't even know.

I saw the hit on TSN.ca and honestly, I lost a lot of respect for Ovechkin. The hit was clearly dirty, I mean, Briere hit the boards so hard that the gate to the bench was knocked open.
Ovechkin said afterward that he didn't think the hit warranted a suspension, but I agree with Sabres coach, Lindsay Ruff - if Briere had done the same to Ovechkin there would be a suspension.
The hit was dangerous and unnecessary. Ovechkin should be suspended.
ETA: I don't think that the hit was intentional. In the sense that I don't think Ovechkin wanted to hurt Briere. However, I still think it was a dangerous and unnecessary hit (and for the record, I'd say the same thing if Crosby had laid out the hit). However, the NHL has decided NOT to take any further action against Ovechkin - he'll be in the line up for the Caps in their next game.

How about Steve Moore, who probably can't play hockey anymore after Todd Bertuzzi tackled him from behind a couple of years ago. Briere will probably suit up for Buffalo's next game.

Yeah, he did hit him from behind as Briere was finishing his shift. It was so uncalled for it's not even funny. Ovechkin should be suspended three games for that. He could've paralyzed and ended Briere's career and livelihood for no reason. And I'm not even a Sabres fan! In fact, I hope they choke like a two-dollar hooker in the first round. But bottom line, Ovechkin should be punished for what he did.

I am a Caps fan and what happened last night should not have happened. I would not be surprised to see him receive a fine and a suspension. I go all the way back to the Dale Hunter days and his cheap shot is one of the worst that I ever seen. Just because I am a hometown Caps fan, I do not condone any act of none sense by any player on any team.

It was not a cheap shot, just some good old time hockey. Stop crying like a baby about it. I bet you have never played hockey before have you. A lot of stuff is going on at a high rate of speed. Stuff happens. I have seen a lot worse go unpunished. Tell Briere to keep his head up next time and realize who is behind him.

i was actually watching the game but you bring up some good points but i dont think he wanted to hit him so his head smashes into the door
I think he just wanted to give him a lil shove but he hit him to hard
BUt the refs did eject him and i heard the nhl mite give him extra punishment so i guess they think it was intentional

it was cheap the fact that the door did open saved him his neck ...if it was into the boards rather than the door it would have been alot worse
