Blair should apologise for apologising! You are right in implying 'Where does it stop! On your Roman theme, perhaps we should apologise to the Italians, on behalf of the Ancient Britons, for Queen Boudica's ruthless sacking of Londinium during the Roman occupation.
Incidentally, regarding slavery - Africans were the big slave dealers, along with the Arabs (who are still in the 'trade' in some parts of the world, such as Sudan). And are they apologising, too? I doubt it! At least the Brits were the first nation to organise a successful movement against slavery.
PS Just seen the answer from some one (I suspect an American..?) saying Britain had stolen the Irish language. Funny that, I thought my Irish ancestors (I'm an Anglo-Irish citizen) spoke Gaelic not Anglo-Saxon! And as far as the 'starving out of people' was concerned, a high proportion of _Irish_ landowners were also involved in the plight of the landworkers. And since the cause of the awful conditions of that time was a viscious potato blight, very little could be done no matter who were landowners. If the factual history of the potato famine is examined (instead of the mythology) it will be seen that many Irish and English landlords tried hard to help their workers. That is not to to say that more could not have been done, but it was not quite the 'We and They' story so beloved of the misty eyed romantics of the St Patrick's Day Parade persuasion. My Irish ancestors were involved on the 'They' side, so suffered quite badly - but as far as I know, not one of my extant Irish relatives is demanding an apology. Why, it would be a bit like modern Americans apologising for the slaughter of Native Americans, and the misappropriation of Indian lands in what is now known as the USA!

I think we should remember our own history and the struggles of the working class. A Thane was a slave owned by the lord of the manor who the lord had total ownership of. Thanes were not Black or of any colour they were white Anglo Saxon peoples who were bought and sold with the Land. Thanes had to do exactly what they were told and were not allowed off of the masters estate. If you are Anglo Saxon you are probably related to such a slave. Is Blair now going to apologise to us for the way we were treated. If all the relatives of the slaves are so disgusted with the English Why don't they return home to the dictatorships of Africa the Congo, South Africa, Zimbabwe Sudan I 'm sure they will be welcome with open arms.

Blair also apoligised to Bertie Ahern for Cromwell's actions in Ireland too. The Irish would probably argue that its 350 years too late and why should Blair say sorry for the actions of one man 350 years ago - when it has nothing to do with Blair! Lots of other Englishmen and Scots did terrible things in Ireland. James I, a scot, was behind the plantation of Ireland - Cromwell was just finishing his dirty work.

the respond is, NO. i do no longer think in inherited guilt. no person alive in the present day, in government or otherwise, had any involvement in the slave commerce. additionally, those that have been slaves are long lifeless. Many black human beings would not be in u . s . a . of america in the present day if it weren't for the slave commerce. The Arabs, and African tribes have been in touch in slavery formerly we've been. different colonialist international places have been additionally in touch in the slave commerce. the international grow to be very diverse then, and so grow to be our value gadget. Britain abolished slavery and in no way had any slaves by employing itself shorelines. you will desire to bypass away historical past the place it particularly is, and supply up attempting to make amends for issues that the commonly used era weren't responsible for. If we began to bypass down this song, Britain would desire to start finding for recompense for the 1st/2nd international wars. only anarchists and fruit muffins would be in touch in this idiotic march. The working classification in Britain had a wretched time in the time of those days of yor. Any benefit to us might have dissipated years in the past, and, in any adventure, may well be extremely over compensated for by employing all of the help that has been given to 0.33 international international places. Please do no longer take this nonsense heavily.

Well, the first co-dependent nation on Earth, is what we are.
Sure aren't united, with all this devisive talk.
I was sub teaching fifth gradesr the other day, about two native tribes we managed to reserve for more death on horrible, not-farmable lands.
I made darned sure to point out that MY families came after that, and most of ours probably did.
Didn't even realize it came out of my mouth.
But it was my way of saying- hey, kids, this is history. It could be personal, but let's try to take ourselves out of it.
Mind you, I'm in a very white area, nowhere nearly as mixed as back in LI. I may have needed to say the same thing, to protect the minority of us who are "white" and whatever that means. But I'd be more protecting my image from the minorities, than trying to help the students distance themselves from this
B***S**T guilt we say we have. They're impressionable. There may be some older folks who say it but don't mean it, and are PC, but these kids amy buy into it.
I try to fight that.

He didn't actually apologise for the slave trade,he apologised for Britains' association with the slave trade.
In his speech he avoided any responsibility through fear of compensation claims by any of the slaves descendants.
Agree or disagree at least Britain admits to its errors of judgement.
As for the next apology,it will be to the Irish for the biased handling of Information about terrorists and their treatment during 70s and 80s.

You are so right! History has many shames. The best apology is to LEARN from them, and go forward to a better future.
After watching 'Into The West' last night however, America has some serious grovelling to do!

Let's get real! It was Blair who was apologising after all. Do you really think he was being any more sincere doing this than he has been any other time?
