Don't sell yourself short.
Consider the tension betwixt the cruelty of whaling in general and the act of creation specific to writing the book. Ask yourself what is creative and what is cruel about the book and who personifies these aspects. Be specific and expand that theme. One question to ask/answer is whether cruelty is necessary in order to create. Define the terms. The vengeance theme as expressed by the personification of nature (the white whale symbol of course) can be contrasted to Ahab's vengeance. Both are victims of cruelty but both have been created by it. As one world or time vanishes it is replaced & another takes its place. Is this cruel to the whalers who depended upon their livelihood thereof? Must we exploit nature for our own survival? Is this cruel or the natural order of things? Lots to do, lots of questions to ask and explore answers to. Good luck.

Okay, "discuss" means to take a stance on the subject and then defend it, anticipating arguments against you. If it's in conjunction with Moby Dick, make sure you link your thesis to it. Philosophical I take to mean of the mind, higher-thinking type of examination. Then the conflict part seems to be man v. nature and his tendency to either destroy or preserve it.

It's just basic man vs. nature
