Yes, its having major problems. These two articles came from ffextreme.com:

Following up the reports of PS3 backwards compatibilty problems, it seems that some old Final Fantasy games won't be playable.

The PS3 has had widespread coverage of faulty and technical problems not only with the machine itself but with the backward compatabilty of old games as well. According to Spiras Destiny, some older Final Fantasy games do not work fully with the next gen system:

Final Fantasy Anthology: If you reach the first save point on CD 1 (FF5), You see a black screen and the play freezes.

Final Fantasy Chronicles: Here you see some texture errors and flickering on the FF4-CD.

Final Fantasy Origins: The Gameplay in Final Fantasy III, as soon as the random battle encounters and you find yourself in battle, the brightness degree is changed.

Final Fantasy VII: If the fight in the Mako reactor on CD1 begins, a flickering black square over the character appears.

Final Fantasy VIII: If you enter into a fight on the World-map, approx 50% the screen goes black and the remainder just looks damaged.

Final Fantasy IX: Both ingame and the FMV videos, 4 transparent lines over the screen appear, if the player or camera moves.

On the news today it was announced that after the release of the Playstation 3 in Japan last weekend, another problem has popped up. Sony have said that over 200 of the 1000 Playstation 2 games will not be playable on the Playstation 3 due to technical difficulties, Sony also said there is nothing they can do about the problem.

Will this disappoint and put more eager PS3 fans off the console?

I want to buy a PS3 once the price goes down a bit AND the problems are fixed....at least until KMH3 comes out...

Well, you're going to have to wait whether or not there's major problems with the PS3 unless you're willing to spend a lot of money on Ebay, or you get really lucky and find a store that has it.

I think Sony is having more problems making the PS3 than the PS3 having problems.

These are confirmed to be true: 1. About 200 PSX/PS2 games can't be played on PS3. 2. About 8000 PSX/PS2 games aren't working properly on the PS3, but with a firmware update, the majority of the games should be fixed. 3. PS3 isn't playing some games in HD.

The only problem I've had with my PS3 is that I can't get the HDMI to work. It could be that I have a pre-1.3 HDMI cable. I just got a new PS3 HDMI cable yesteday, so I'll have to test it to see if it's the PS3 that's messed up or if it's the old HDMI cable.
