I have TWO coming out stories.
First as a "lesbian" and then again as transgendered.
As a lesbian, I first told my best friend. THEN, she proceeded to tell another one of our mutual friends, and the next day, by the end of the school day, my WHOLE SCHOOL new. So, I came out, but I was also outed. I got "exiled" from gym class because the girls were afraid of me being in the locker room. I nearly got ran over in the school parking lot after theatre practice one day. After all that harassment (and the principle calling my house) I decided to come out to my mom. She was pretty cool with it for the most part.
Coming out as transgendered, I first outed myself to the transgender support group I went to I guess. Then I came out to my close friends, then my doctor (to get my hormones). But, I was also OUTED too. I had gotten arrested for making out with someone on my college campus and was arrested by the campus police for "public lewdness". Anyway, the police report had my transgender status and said that I was a "female to male waiting for an operation" (yeah right, like the magic operation fairy is gonna bring it to me...I would have NEVER said something like that). Anyway, the school newspaper decided to print a 1/4 page article on the incident in the school paper to include my NAME and my TRANSGENDER status. So...I got "outed" to about 22,000 students, staff, and faculty.
And it's GREAT to be glbt, right?! :)

I came out to:
1.) Lover (lol, of course)
2.) co-workers
3.) friends
Didn't come out to my family yet, but I think they already know. And they leave me some interpretation of Bible verses every now and then. They constantly ask me when I'm hanging out with a girl and remind me of Sodom and Gomorrah. I used to get furious and combative, but now I just laugh. They never cease to tickle me. Lol.

I came out in the following order -
Family - Parents, because they deserved to know, and they are good people
Co-Workers - easier, less attachment, less to lose.
then it became an mix of Friends and Family - depending on whom I wanted to know (and thought deserved/needed to know).
I came out myself and was also outed. I came out to all family except for my brother. We are extremely close, and out of all my family I feared the rejection from him - then a drunk friend outed me to him at our father's wake. Thankfully, he took it very well given everything else that was going on that day. I chose to come out to my good friends after that - true friends stay by your side.
With co-workers I came out originally there, and it just spread - they were all very gossipy *grins* I worked in a very gay friendly workplace.
I generally don't come out to strangers - it's just a part of my life that doesn't factor into random conversation.

I came out to schoolfriends first, then family. Since then: anyone who asks.
I've never been 'outed', because I've never pretended to be straight. As soon as I knew I was gay, I came out. Not necessarily a good idea for everyone, but it worked for me.

I came out first to my church...where I was promptly abused massively.
Then to my family and people at school.
All within a few weeks during 1978...while I was in high school.
