The egg is released instantly, and its only viable for fetalization for 24-36 hours.
Ovulation does not last for days. You have a peek day of the LH hormone which causes your body to release the egg withing about 12-24 hours, from that point the egg is only viable for another 24-36 hours.
There are three or four days where sex is most likely to result in fertalization, the day before ovulation, the day of, and the day after. This is because sperm can survive in the female reproductive tract for anywhere from 24-72 hours, sometimes less, sometimes more.

ovulation is 1 day but sperm can live for 3-5 days so you can get preg. if you had sex before (3-5 days ) you ovulate. YOu can have a spike on the ovulation tests up to a few days though. So have sex 10-14 days after day 1 on your period.

Ovulation is the name given to the release of an egg from the ovaries. It occurs roughly around the middle of your cycle. One released the egg remains viable for fertilisation for just 12-24 hours.
You can tell when you ovukate by taking your temperature every morning when you wake up. It will rise when you ovulate and will stay higher until your next period.

Once the egg is released it will survive for 12-24 hours. Eggs start deteriorating soon after they are released.

amosunknown's answer was really good. I only have one thing to add: your cervical mucous (cm) is what helps to keep sperm alive on their journey to your fallopian tubes, where fertilization occurs. If your cm is fertile quality, it is slick and wet. If not, it is almost sticky or crumbly. You can check by using clean first and second fingers to reach to your cervix and pull some away. Look at it and see.
Also, some fertility meds actually decrease the fertiule quality of your cm, so the use of non-harmful (to sperm) lube is wise. The only one I'm aware of on the market is called "Pre-seed" and it is pretty nice.
And it's worth noting that you should be checking for four signs of fertility, which can be remembered by the accronym SHOW: Soft cervix, High cervix, Open cervix, and Wet cm.
