I'm a bit concerned that your firewall is advertising your presence to the world so that people with port scanners get interested in the first place.

Your PC should not be responding to probes at all. It should be operating in "Stealth" mode.

Go to www.grc.com and click on ShieldsUp on the fron page then scroll down and click on the Shields up link
then on the proceed button then on probe common ports. This will examine your firewall response. If they don't respond Stealth, then follow the advice on the site.

If you don't know, then I guess you didn't need to trace it! :)

Seriously, if you wanted to, you could look up the IP address and see where the attack might be coming from. However, it's probably not worth the bother in most cases.

I've notified dozens of ISPs when their users were hacking my systems, trying to send out spam, etc.

99% of the time, nothing happens.

One place to start is to go to

http://www.networksolutions.com/whois/index.jsp

you can enter in their IP address or domain name to find out who owns it and where it is registered. It will usually include a contact name and phone number.
