Bettas don't live in puddles.

Yes, they are native to rice paddy fields, however, they do not live in a puddle. Bettas have the remarkable ability to jump, and they have an enormous lateral expanse to roam. In other words, they can jump around to a lot of 'puddles'. However, these 'puddles' can be 3 or 4 feet deep, which means that bettas have A LOT of room in the wild.

If you're planning on keeping a betta, please give him at least 2 gallons (the more the better). Cruelty aside, you'll find that he's much happier and much more lively if you give him ample space.

In the wild a betta in a small puddle is a dying betta. He/she have been washed there by flooding, or his pond might have dried up. Assuming he doesn't decide to go for a walk to find better diggs. He only survive for 2-4 weeks in a puddle. In large "puddle" the size of small car a betta might survive for months if there were insect in/on the water.

In the wild a Betta's natural habitat is rice patties and similar bodys of water, much like you could "survive" living in a closet for a few days. they may exist for short periods of time in a "puddle" but not indefinitely. The "myth" that Betta's live in puddles is just something people tell themselves to make it seem less cruel to keep them in tiny containers.
