for everyone to forget the materialistic side to christmas and just enjoy being with those they love, doing traditional things like carol singing, walking around seeing all the lights wrapped up warm, and finally being just truly thankful, peaceful and happy.

This answer applies to many industrialized nations:
1 - All gifts given should be from the labor of the giver.
2 - Minimize the commercialization of Christmas.
3 - Maximize the giver's sacrifice of his/her time and skills.
4 - Express love to the gift recipient.
5 - Don't express the giver's obligatory, crass and excessive use of credit.
Other answers would need to be developed for non-industrialized nations. But, I'm not from one of them, so I don't really have an answer for that type of nation.
