I had my brakes done awhile back....drove 800 miles just fine, but then, as I was driving down the interstate yesterday, there was this loud, vibrating, knocking noise! They think it might be the barrings, but not sure yet. It's the same guys fixing it as the ones who did the brake job. How do I know if it's their fault or if it was just coincedence? If in fact it IS the barrings, they're talking like, a $300 job. Seem fair?

depends on the car model. a front wheel drive or 4 wd cost a lot more then old time rwd. i just had 4 wd S10 done and it costs 375 dollars with rebuilt bearings.

Are you being ripped off? Hard to say. Would need to know exactly what work was done on the brake job and what the new problem is. Back in the old drum brake days, a bearing inspection and re-pack was part of a brake job, on the front axle anyway. But with modern front-wheel-drive and disk brakes that's no longer the case. The bearings are sealed and normally last the life of the vehicle with no maintenance.
The noise you describe COULD be bearings, or could be a CV joint on the drive axles. Maybe it's something that they should have caught during the brake job, maybe not. If there was any noticable play in the bearings they should have caught that. Or if there was a torn boot or any play in a CV joint, they probably should have caught that as well. But that's only if the condition existed at the time the brakes were done. If the boot on a CV joint gets punctured or torn, failure will follow very quickly and it may have been in good condition when the brakes were done. There's just no way to know without seeing the vehicle.
Front bearings on a front-wheel-drive vehicle could run that high in some cases. So could a half shaft (drive axle) if a CV joint failed. When those parts fail they often do additional damage that obviously now needs to be repaired.

Sounds to me like a brake caliper came loose - one of the bolts that holds the caliper to the support bracket may have backed out. This will result in exactly the sorts of symptoms you describe but as long as there was no damage to anything can be corrected in minutes.
What it does not sound like is wheel bearings, though depending on the type of car $300 is not unreasonable at all. Most cars today do not have servicable bearings. The complete hub with bearings permenantly sealed inside is replaced as a unit. On may vehicles the ABS sensor is also part of this unit. The part alone frequently runs $2-300 depending on model.

If you replaced your battery, drove 800 miles and your alternator quit, would it be the fault of the guy who sold you the battery? Same thing. Parts fail. As to price, I have no idea. Call around after you find out for sure what is needed, and ask for the SAME job in a couple of places to see if $300 is in the ball park. I would be if things were damaged, and from your description it sounds like there was some damage done.

You don't specify what kind of vehicle you have. I have seen brake jobs done that involved replacing the rotors. On some vehicles to replace the rotors, you have to remove the caliper and a caliper bracket. I have seen where the caliper bracket bolt wasn't tightened down and after close to 1000 miles the bolt finally worked its way loose and falls out. The caliper assembly tends to fall away from the rotor and starts rubbing against the rim. I have seen this a few times. I would have that checked out. I have seen where it has rubbed long enough to actually cut a rim in half and that is not good.

Really depends on the car, If you have sealed bearings there is NO way the mechanic could have foreseen a failure, If your car has cone brgs he could have recommended an inspection and made his decision biased on what he saw. Is it his fault ... maybe but you have to prove that he knew the brgs would fail first, your probably not going to get them to help you out. As for the 300.00, IF that's just one side its a little high(depending on the labor rate) If its for both sides(the right way to fix it is to do both sides at once) that's a fair price.

Seems a little high for bearings. I don't think you can blame your mechanic if you have driven 8000 miles since the brake job.

No, why would you think you are being ripped off?? Wheel bearings and brakes are two different things. Neither has anything to do with the other...Two seperate components.

could be a re-issued or US version, Will, as a results of fact my CD had the two a variety of songs. it quite is relatively the album the place i found "warning" ~ one in all my familiar Black Sabbath songs :) there's a Vinegar Joe album I seen figuring out to purchase ~ "Six megastar prevalent" ~ till I examine the comments :~ " 'Lemon' is the label, and a ideal lemon it quite is basically too. This CD has of course been 'mastered' from a vinyl checklist, with of course audible vinyl floor noise, monitoring distortion AND end of edge wow (speed version)" ************ ********** ************ Remebered yet another one :~ whilst WB first positioned the double LP of Fleetwood Mac's "Tusk" on CD, they had to edit the song 'Sara' to make it extra healthful. It ultimately have been given it quite is finished 6:26 launch on the 2004 re-undertaking.
